You already have the ticket
Palatine Hill is not a separate purchase. The park's
page for the standard ticket gives "ONLY 1 entrance to the archaeological area of the
Roman Forum-Palatine at the desired time, within 24 hours before or after the booking time at the Colosseum". The Forum and the hill are one area with one entrance, so the Palatine has to be done in the same visit as the Forum.
The park's
Palatine page puts its address at Via di San Gregorio 30 and lists toilets, an info point, audio guides, a refreshment point and a bookshop among its services.
Not everyone uses it. Two travelers write about visitors who leave it out without knowing it was paid for, and a third did not go and regretted it afterwards. Three more asked before the trip whether the Forum and the Palatine were worth the time at all.
The trade-off: the hill costs nothing extra, so the only price is time and legs. Skipping it saves an hour or two and gives up the part of the ticket that visitors praise most.
The view
The view is what people write about. In our corpus, 30 travelers single out the view from the Palatine: over the Forum, across to the Colosseum, and out over the city.
“The view from the top of the Palatine Hill was worth the steps.”
— Reddit, June 2023
They name several places to stand. Some mention the terrace of the Farnese Gardens, which the park describes as "the fascinating Horti Farnesiani, on the upper part of the hill". Others mention a belvedere over the Forum, the stadium, or the side that looks toward the Colosseum. One reviewer in 2025 called the belvedere unbeatable and added that it took a long time to find.
The trade-off: the best view of the Forum is not in the Forum. It is a climb away, and the reviews that mention it agree it is the reason to make the climb.
The visitors who liked it more than the Colosseum
This is the count that surprised us. In our corpus, 14 travelers say the Palatine and the Forum were better than the Colosseum, or the best part of the three.
“I went in caring mostly about the colosseum and left with it being my third favorite of the three.” — Reddit
The reasons repeat. The Colosseum is one building and a crowd; the hill is many buildings, gardens and room to walk. Seven travelers describe the Palatine as quieter or less crowded than the sites next to it, and one group that entered at the 9 am opening found the Forum below almost empty.
That does not make it a replacement. These are people who did both, on one ticket, and came out ranking them.
| What they say | Travelers | Worth knowing |
| 🌄 The view from the top is the highlight | 30 | Over the Forum, the Colosseum and the city |
| 🏆 Better than the Colosseum | 14 | The Palatine and the Forum together |
| 🤫 Quieter than the sites next to it | 7 | Emptiest at the 9 am opening, by one account |
| 🥾 The climb | 7 | All seven still recommend it |
| ☀️ Hot, with little shade | 4 | One travel channel says the opposite |
| 🗺️ Bigger than expected, or no time left | 9 | It closes with the Forum |
| ⏭️ Skippable | 2 | For visitors with no interest in ruins |

The trade-off: the Colosseum is the reason the ticket was bought, and the hill is where a good share of the visit's pleasure turns out to be. Giving the Colosseum all the time and the hill what is left is the plan these travelers would change.
What it costs: the climb, the sun, the size
The praise comes with conditions. Seven travelers mention the climb or the steps, and all seven still recommend it.
Shade is where accounts disagree. Four travelers describe the hill as hot and exposed.
“Palatine Hill has very little shade, and gets blazing hot from all the stone/ruins.” — Reddit
A Rome travel channel on YouTube told a viewer in 2021 the opposite: that the Palatine has shade and suits the middle of the day better than the Colosseum does. Both can be true of different parts of a hill with gardens on top and open ruins on its slopes. We would not plan a summer midday there on the strength of one reply.
Size is the third cost. Nine travelers say the area was bigger than they expected, or that they ran out of time or energy before seeing it.
“Palatine Hill is huge, so we only got to see the Palace of Domitian and the Farnese Gardens before it closed.”
— Reddit, June 2025
Finding things is part of it. Two reviewers in 2025 describe looking for a long time for what they wanted to see. The second had no map in hand: the folding map was on sale for €3.90 and the reviewer saw it only on the way out.
The trade-off: the hill rewards a morning and punishes a tired afternoon. The same travelers who loved it say they would give it more time and an earlier hour.
Who can skip it, and what is behind the doors
Two travelers call it skippable. One of them, in 2017, was specific.
“Palatine Hill has some pretty cool views but is otherwise kinda boring unless you like park like things.”
— Reddit, June 2017
That is a fair description of the hill for someone who does not care about ruins: views, gardens and walls. The standard ticket covers exactly that, the open-air hill.
The interiors are a different ticket. On the park's list, the hill's indoor sites belong to the SUPER sites: the "Palatine Museum (lower floor only)", the "House of Augustus (closed on Monday)" and the House of Livia, among others. They need a ticket that includes the SUPER sites or the €4 supplement.
And the hill closes with the Forum. The
visitor regulation, which the park publishes in Italian, sets the last admission an hour before closing, which in winter means 3.30 pm.
The trade-off: with a standard ticket the Palatine is a walk with a view, and for most of the people who wrote about it that was enough. The painted rooms need a different ticket and a day that is not Monday.
Common questions
❓ Is Palatine Hill included in the Colosseum ticket?
Yes. The standard ticket includes one entrance to the Roman Forum and Palatine area, within 24 hours before or after the Colosseum slot. The Forum and the Palatine are entered together, in a single visit.
❓ Is Palatine Hill worth visiting?
Most travelers who write about it say yes. In our corpus, 30 single out the view from the top and 14 say they liked the Palatine and the Forum more than the Colosseum. Two call it skippable for anyone not interested in ruins.
❓ How hard is the climb up Palatine Hill?
Travelers describe steps and a steep path, and the seven who mention the climb still recommend it. Several say the hill is hot and exposed in summer, so the morning is the easier time.
❓ Can you see the House of Augustus with a standard Colosseum ticket?
No. The House of Augustus, the House of Livia and the Palatine Museum are among the SUPER sites, which need a ticket that includes them or the €4 supplement. The House of Augustus is closed on Monday.
Author and Method
Research by Intercoper Curator Team. Evidence read and classified in October 2026.
From a corpus of 21,308 items about visiting the Colosseum, we pulled every item in which a traveler passes judgment on the Palatine in the same sentence that names it: 119 after removing duplicates, with guided-tour reviews from booking platforms left out. All were read and classified by hand. The counts here are these: 30 travelers who single out the view; 14 who liked the Palatine and the Forum more than the Colosseum; seven who describe it as quieter; seven who mention the climb; four who describe heat and no shade, against one channel that says the opposite; nine who found it bigger than expected or ran out of time; two who had trouble finding things; two who call it skippable; two who write about visitors leaving it out, one who regretted not going, and three who asked whether it was worth it. Some travelers appear in more than one count.
These are counts of accounts on Reddit, TripAdvisor, Google Maps and YouTube, not rates. People who climb a hill and enjoy the view are more likely to write about it than people who walked past, so this article cannot tell you what share of visitors skip the Palatine.
The official facts were read on October 11 to 13, 2026: the park's page for the standard ticket, its Palatine page, its Forum Pass SUPER page and the visitor regulation updated on October 8, 2026. All of it is the part that expires.
