What the ticket allows
The park's
page for the standard ticket says you book the entrance time to the Colosseum and "decide whether to visit the
Roman Forum and the Palatine earlier or later". The terms follow in capitals: "ONLY 1 entrance to the archaeological area of the Roman Forum-Palatine at the desired time, within 24 hours before or after the booking time at the Colosseum".
So the order is yours, and the window is a full day on each side.
Full Experience tickets work by the calendar instead: on the official listing their Forum admission is "either the day before, the same day or the day after the visit to the Colosseum".
| Ticket | Forum and Palatine | When |
| 🎟️ 24h Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine | One entrance | Any time within 24 hours before or after the Colosseum slot |
| ⭐ Full Experience | One entrance | The day before, the same day or the day after the Colosseum |
| ⏰ Colosseum slot missed | One entrance, if not used already | The ticket no longer opens the Colosseum |
From the park's page for the standard ticket, the official listing for individual visitors and the visitor regulation, read on October 11 and 12, 2026.
This is the question travelers ask most. In our corpus, 18 travelers asked whether the Forum can come first, or how the 24 hours work.
“Do you think it's better to see the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill before or after the Colloseum tour?”
— Reddit, March 2026
Most of them had a Colosseum slot in the middle of the day or late in the afternoon and wanted to know whether the morning was wasted. It is not.
The trade-off: the Forum has no clock and the Colosseum has nothing else. Whatever order you pick, the plan has to be built around the one time that cannot change.
One entrance means the Forum and the Palatine together
The park's pages do not say re-entry. They say "ONLY 1 entrance", and the area that single entrance covers is the Roman Forum and the Palatine as one site. The
visitor regulation, which the park publishes in Italian, words it the same way: one admission to the archaeological areas of the Roman Forum-Palatine and the Imperial Fora.
Three reviewers learned it at the gate. One left the Forum for lunch in 2023, planning to come back for the Palatine.
“Make sure you have either eaten beforehand/brought in food or visit EVERYTHING before leaving.”
— TripAdvisor, 3 stars, February 2023
The other two came back on the second day of a two-day ticket, in 2019 and 2022, and were refused because the Forum or the Palatine had been entered the day before. Five more travelers pass the same warning on without having been stopped themselves.
The trade-off: the single entrance is generous in hours and strict at the turnstile. Bring water and something to eat, and do the Palatine in the same visit as the Forum, because there is no second one.
The time that barely moves
The risk in going to the Forum first is the clock at the other end. The standard ticket's FAQ asks "Is it possible to enter the Colosseum at a different time from the one booked?" and answers "It is not possible".
The regulation gives the exact margin, and it depends on the ticket. With the standard ticket, and with the Full Experience ticket for the arena, the visitor has to be there within the 15 minutes before the time on the ticket "e non oltre 15 minuti dopo": and no later than 15 minutes after it. The underground ticket asks for 30 minutes before, "senza tolleranze sul ritardo", with no tolerance for being late. The Only Arena and attic tickets ask for 15 minutes before, on the same terms.
| Ticket | Be there | After the time on the ticket |
| 🎟️ 24h Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine | Within the 15 minutes before | Up to 15 minutes |
| ⭐ Full Experience, arena | Within the 15 minutes before | Up to 15 minutes |
| ⭐ Full Experience, underground and arena | 30 minutes before | No tolerance |
| 🏟️ 24h Only Arena | 15 minutes before | No tolerance |
| ⭐ Full Experience, attic | 15 minutes before | No tolerance |
From article 7 of the visitor regulation updated on October 8, 2026, read on October 12, 2026.
Three reviewers went to the Forum first and did not get into the Colosseum afterwards. Two of them, in 2024, missed the time on the ticket: one had bought it at the Forum ticket office that morning and understood from the clerk that the hour was flexible. The third, in September 2025, was refused for a different reason.
“As they pointed out, it said on the reservation (in tiny letters) to go to the Colosseum first.”
— TripAdvisor, 2 stars, September 2025
That review does not say who sold the reservation. The park's own ticket does not carry that condition, so read the small print of any ticket bought elsewhere before choosing the order.
The regulation covers the other direction. A visitor who misses the Colosseum slot keeps one admission to the Forum and the Palatine, "se non già utilizzato": if it has not been used already. Whoever did the Forum first and then missed the slot has nothing left on the ticket.
The trade-off: Forum first puts the fixed appointment at the end of a site where people lose track of time. Colosseum first gets the appointment out of the way and leaves the rest of the day open.
Which gate
The park's page lists the entrances to the Roman Forum and the Palatine: the Arch of Titus, Largo della Salara Vecchia, the passage of Via del Tulliano, Via del Foro Romano and Via di San Gregorio. The first one faces the Colosseum, and that is where the line forms.
Six travelers describe that line, including people who already held tickets. One waited half an hour or more in the sun after a morning at the Colosseum, and one gave up the Forum part of a ticket in 2023 because of the queue.
Eight travelers recommend a gate away from the Colosseum. Several name the one on Via di San Gregorio, which opens onto the Palatine.
“the vsg entrance takes two minutes. The forum entrance looks like hours in line”
— Reddit, April 2023
The most recent account is from June 2026: at the 9 am opening the writer and their companions were alone at that gate and had the Palatine nearly to themselves. Entering there reverses the usual route. You start on the hill, with the view over the Forum, and walk down into it.
The trade-off: the gate on Via di San Gregorio is about ten minutes on foot from the Colosseum by a traveler's count, and it starts with a climb. In exchange, the people who used it report no line at the hour when the main gate has one.
Before, after, or another day
Travelers do not agree on the order, and their reasons are worth more than the tally. Four argue for the Forum first, three for the Colosseum first, and four for a different day.
The case for the Forum in the morning is heat and closing time. A traveler points out that the Palatine has little shade, and a reviewer who went in the late afternoon in 2025 found parts of it already closed. The regulation closes the Forum and the Palatine at 6.30 pm until the last Saturday of October and at 4.30 pm from the last Sunday of October, with the last admission an hour before. In 2026 the change falls on October 25, and from that day the last admission is at 3.30 pm.
The case for the Colosseum first is the crowd there and the fixed slot: get it done early, then take the Forum at your own pace. The regulation limits the stay inside the Colosseum to 75 minutes with the standard ticket and 90 with a Full Experience ticket, so the hour you come out can be worked out in advance.
The case for another day is size. Five travelers write that they ran short of time in the Forum, among them one who entered at 2.30 pm and called it a mistake. With a standard ticket the other day has to fall inside the 24 hours. A 3 pm slot in November leaves no Forum that afternoon, because the gates stop admitting at 3.30 pm. It leaves that morning, or the next one.
One old piece of advice no longer works the way it is told. Nine travelers, writing between 2014 and 2019, say to buy the combined ticket at the Forum or Palatine ticket office and then walk straight into the Colosseum. Two accounts from 2024 show what that purchase gives now: a ticket with an assigned Colosseum time.
The trade-off: there is no best order, only the one that fits your slot. A morning slot points to Colosseum first; a late one points to the Forum before it, with a margin, or to the next morning.
Common questions
❓ Can I visit the Roman Forum before my Colosseum time slot?
Yes. The standard ticket allows one entrance to the Roman Forum and Palatine area at the time you choose, within 24 hours before or after the Colosseum booking. The Colosseum time cannot be changed, and with the standard ticket the regulation allows no more than 15 minutes after it, so leave a margin to get there.
❓ Can I leave the Roman Forum and come back later?
No. The ticket gives only one entrance to the Roman Forum and Palatine area. Three reviewers in our corpus were turned away when they tried to go back in, including a visitor who had left for lunch.
❓ Are the Roman Forum and the Palatine separate entries?
No. They are one archaeological area with one entrance on the ticket. Visiting the Forum one day and returning for the Palatine the next does not work, even on a two-day ticket.
❓ Which entrance to the Roman Forum has the shortest line?
Travelers recommend the gates away from the Colosseum, most often the one on Via di San Gregorio, which enters by the Palatine. The park lists it among the official entrances to the Roman Forum and Palatine area.
Author and Method
Research by Intercoper Curator Team. Evidence read and classified in October 2026.
From a corpus of 21,308 items about visiting the Colosseum, we pulled every item about the order of the Forum and the Colosseum, the entrances to the Forum and the Palatine, and coming back in: 229 after removing duplicates, guided-tour reviews from booking platforms excluded. All were read and classified by hand. The counts here are these: 18 travelers who asked whether the Forum can come first; three turned away on returning and five who pass on the warning; three who went to the Forum first and did not get into the Colosseum; six who describe the line at the Forum and eight who recommend another gate; four for the Forum first, three for the Colosseum first and four for another day; five who ran short of time; and nine who give the older advice about buying at the Forum, with two accounts from 2024 of what that purchase gives now. Some travelers appear in more than one count.
These are counts of accounts on Reddit, TripAdvisor, YouTube, Quora and Google Maps, not rates. People write when a gate turns them back, so this article cannot tell you how often staff let a returning visitor through.
The rules were read on October 11 and 12, 2026: the park's page for the standard ticket, the listing for individual visitors on the official ticketing site, and the visitor regulation updated on October 8, 2026, which exists in Italian only. All of it is the part that expires.
