📄Can you visit the Colosseum underground without a guide? The official site sells two tickets: one is the Educational Tour, one is not. What differs.

💡Quick Answer

The two official tickets list the same places: the Colosseum, the arena, the underground, the Forum, the Palatine and the SUPER sites. They differ in one line. Full Experience – Underground Levels and Arena – Educational Tour, at €32, is a tour of the underground at a booked time. The ticket without "Educational Tour" in its name, at €24, is entry to the underground at a booked time. In our corpus, 11 travelers asked whether the cheaper one meant going down alone, with a guide, or not at all.

Two listings that differ in one line

The official ticketing site sells them in two different sections. "FULL EXPERIENCE - UNDERGROUND LEVELS AND ARENA" sits with the tickets for individuals. "FULL EXPERIENCE - UNDERGROUND LEVELS AND ARENA - EDUCATIONAL TOUR" sits under Educational Tours. Read side by side in October 2026, every line of what they include is the same except the one about the underground. The park's own page for the ticket treats them as one ticket with two fares: full entry at €24, and full entry with educational tour at €32. It also lists a reduced fare of €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 24.

Because the names are almost identical and only one says "tour", buyers cannot tell what happens on the other. Sixteen travelers in our corpus asked about the pair before buying, and eleven of them asked the same thing in different words.

“the website states you cannot access the underground without a guide, but I’ve read reviews and comments from people saying they were able to enter the underground without one. So which is it?”

— Reddit, April 2025

“Why do they sell Individual Underground tickets if I won't be able to access the underground levels?”

— Reddit, March 2025
The trade-off: the two tickets open the same doors. What the €8 difference buys is on one line of the listing, and it is an explanation, not an area.

Can you visit the Colosseum underground without a guide?

Without a tour, yes. Alone, no, by every account we have. The cheaper listing says entry to the underground at the booked time. It does not say "self-guided" and it does not say "accompanied", which is why the question keeps coming back.
Three sources in the corpus describe the same arrangement, and only one of them is a visit. A traveler planning a trip in 2022, who had not bought the ticket, read the listing as an accompanied visit rather than a guided tour. Another posted the answer they received by email from CoopCulture, the operator that sold the tickets before the park did: the ticket does not include a guided tour, and staff accompany the group only for security reasons. The one traveler who describes using the ticket, in May 2024, calls it an accompanied visit that starts at the time printed on it.
Two travelers read it the other way and planned around a mistake. One bought the €24 ticket and then hired a licensed guide for the same time slot. Another assumed the cheaper ticket required one. The listing does link to slots reserved for tourist guides, but that is a separate product for professionals with their own groups, not a condition of the individual ticket.
The trade-off: on the cheaper ticket you see the tunnels and nobody tells you what you are looking at. If the underground is the reason you came, that is the part the other ticket adds.

The time on the ticket is the underground time

Both listings say the underground visit is at the booked time, with a mandatory arrival 30 minutes before. That line matters more than it looks, and the one detailed account in the corpus from someone holding the €24 ticket is about getting it wrong.

“The time on the ticket is the entry time to the underground experience, not the entry time to the colosseum!”

— Reddit, May 2024
That traveler was scanned in a few minutes before the printed time, after queues that were not moving, and by then the group had gone down.

“I learned later on there's a group meeting point even for self-guided underground access and I was told my group has left.”

— Reddit, May 2024
They did not see the underground. It is one account, from one day in May 2024, and we cannot tell you how often it happens. But a second traveler asked exactly this question before going, whether the printed time was for the underground or for the entrance, and the listing answers it: the booked time is the underground, and you are expected half an hour earlier.
The trade-off: the 30 minutes are not a suggestion. A ticket this hard to get is lost by arriving at the time printed on it.

The Educational Tour, from the people who took it

Three travelers in the corpus describe the official tour after doing it. Two are openly positive, the third simply describes how it ran, and three is too few to call a pattern.
“Versus the official Colosseum underground didactic tour I took which was quite good and had a very qualified guide.” — Reddit, undated
“We were away from the crowds as it was only our small group of 15 down there.” — Reddit, undated
The third describes a group of about twenty, with the guide talking throughout and taking questions.
Read these with their age in mind. Neither quote carries a date in our corpus, and all three accounts call the tour "didactic", the name it had when CoopCulture sold it. A traveler in April 2024 found CoopCulture selling only through the end of that month and sending buyers to the park's own ticketing site for May. So the three accounts describe the tour under the previous operator, and the corpus has none yet from the Educational Tour the park sells today.
Four travelers asked how long the visit lasts and what it covers. The park's page gives one figure, a 90-minute stay in the Colosseum for this type of ticket, and it applies to both fares. It does not say how much of that is spent underground. Shorter figures circulate in the corpus, but they come from the previous operator's pages and we are not repeating them as today's.
The trade-off: the tour is the same route with someone qualified explaining it, for €8 more. The accounts are good and few, and all of them come from people who managed to get the ticket.

The language you can get is not always the language you speak

The Educational Tour is sold by language, and the languages do not have the same number of slots. A traveler who listed them in September 2025 counted nine daily times in English and two each in French, Spanish and Italian. Three travelers say English is the language that sells out first. The park's page says the ticket can be bought online from 30 days before the visit.
Five travelers in the corpus wrote about buying, or considering, the tour in another language because English was gone. Four of them bought it. Two of those four say they do not speak the language, and one says they do.

“THEN I was refreshing and saw two 12:30p Educational Torus with the Underground and Arena available for the same day (in Italian, which we don't speak 😂). I panicked and bought those too!”

— Reddit, June 2025
The two who do not speak it planned to follow along with an audio app. Neither came back to say how it went.
If no official fare is left in a language you can follow, the route that remains is an underground tour with an operator, which travelers in the corpus report at several times the official price.
The trade-off: a tour you cannot follow costs €32 and gives you what the €24 ticket gives you. It is still a way underground on a day when nothing else is available.

Common questions

❓ What is the difference between Full Experience Underground Levels and Arena and the Educational Tour?

One line on the official listing. The €32 Educational Tour includes a tour of the underground at the booked time; the €24 ticket includes entry to the underground at the booked time. Everything else listed is the same: the Colosseum, the arena, the Forum, the Palatine and the SUPER sites.

❓ Can you visit the Colosseum underground without a guide?

With the €24 ticket you go down without a tour, but not on your own. The one traveler in our corpus who used it describes an accompanied visit with a group at a set time, and an email from the previous operator said staff go down with the group for security. You do not need to hire a guide for it.

❓ How long is the Colosseum underground visit?

The park gives a 90-minute stay in the Colosseum for this type of ticket, on either fare, and does not say how long the underground part lasts. Four travelers in the corpus asked. The shorter figures that circulate come from CoopCulture's pages, not from the park's.

❓ Is the time on the ticket the entry time to the Colosseum?

No. Both listings give the booked time as the time of the underground visit and ask you to arrive 30 minutes before it. One traveler who arrived at the printed time in May 2024 missed the group.

Author and Method

Research by Intercoper Curator Team. Evidence read and classified in October 2026.
From a corpus of 21,308 items about visiting the Colosseum, we pulled every item that names either official underground ticket, under its current name or the one it had with the previous operator: 74 after removing duplicates. All were read and classified by hand. Most are about how hard the tickets are to get, which other articles on this site cover. The counts here come from the rest: 16 travelers asking about the two tickets before buying, 11 of them about the guide; five who bought or considered the tour in another language; three who say English sells out first; three who describe the guided tour after taking it, all under the previous operator; and one who describes using the €24 ticket.
These are counts of accounts on Reddit, not rates. The corpus has almost no rated reviews of the official tickets, because the park does not collect them, so this article cannot tell you how often a visit goes well. Where a point rests on one account, the text says so.
Prices and inclusions were read on the official ticketing site and on the ticket page of the Parco archeologico del Colosseo on October 10, 2026, and they are the part that expires. The official tickets were sold by CoopCulture before the park opened its own ticketing site; a traveler in the corpus places the change in May 2024. Prices and names were different then, and anything in this article from that period is given as such and is not a statement about today.
What neither the listings nor the park's ticket page state: how long the underground part of the visit lasts, who goes down with the group on the €24 fare, and which languages and times the Educational Tour runs. The accounts above describe them as travelers found them.
Quotes are reproduced exactly as written, including spelling, and each was checked word for word against the stored text.
