Who pays nothing, and who pays €2
The list is in the appendix of the
visitor regulation, which the park publishes in Italian. The free ticket goes to "minori di 18 anni", to people with a disability and a companion, to EU tour guides and to holders of a named ICOM card. It is given "previa esibizione di un documento di identità o altro apposito documento attestante la condizione": on showing an identity document, or another document that proves the condition. For any other category the regulation points to the Italian culture ministry's list.
The reduced ticket costs €2 against €18 for the full one. It is for European Union citizens from 18 "fino al giorno del compimento del 25esimo anno di età", up to the day of the 25th birthday, also on showing an identity document.
One parent asked whether the free ticket depends on nationality. The regulation's line on minors names an age and nothing else. Four travelers asked whether they qualified for the €2 ticket: a Canadian, an American who had already bought one, and two non-EU citizens living in the EU on a work visa or a residence permit. One reviewer in April 2026 found out at the entrance, with a British daughter of 18.
“we got caught out here and were made to buy a full price adult ticket”
— TripAdvisor, 3 stars, April 2026
The same review says the €2 already paid was not refunded. Two asked about student tickets. The regulation's appendix has no student fare. The reductions it lists are the €2 fare for EU citizens, a Roma Pass ticket at €11.50 and a €14 ticket the park calls RAP, for holders of a ticket to certain partner museums.
The trade-off: the reduced ticket saves €16 and is checked against an identity document. If that document is not from an EU country, the saving turns into a second, full-price purchase at the door.
Book it or collect it: four official texts
This is where the park's pages stop agreeing with each other. All four were read on October 11, 2026.
The regulation is short about it: "Tutti i biglietti gratuiti dovranno essere obbligatoriamente prenotati on line". All free tickets must be booked online. It adds that for tickets bought online the proof of the right to free entry is checked at the entrance.
The park's
free tickets page, dated April 6, 2023, says the same in English: "Children under 18 years old must book the entrance" on the official ticketing site, and so must other individual visitors entitled to a free ticket.
The
booking page for the standard ticket on the official ticketing site carries a note in its fare section: visitors entitled to a free ticket "need to book their admission on this page".
The fourth text says the opposite. The ticket pages on the park's site carry a FAQ with the question "How do I book a free ticket?", and the answer is: "Free tickets cannot be booked but can be collected at the ticket offices". The next sentence makes an exception: "24h OnlyArena and
Full Experience tickets must be booked".
| Where it is | What it says about a free ticket |
| 📜 Visitor regulation | Updated October 8, 2026, in Italian | All free tickets must be booked online |
| 🆓 Free tickets page | Park's site, dated April 6, 2023 | Under-18s and other entitled visitors must book on the ticketing site |
| 🖥️ Standard ticket booking page | Official ticketing site, fare section | Entitled visitors need to book their admission on that page |
| ❓ FAQ on each ticket page | Park's site | Cannot be booked, collected at the ticket offices, except 24h Only Arena and Full Experience, which must be booked |
All four read on October 11, 2026. The first three agree; the fourth is the only one that describes collecting.
We did not go past the date step of the booking, because choosing a time holds real tickets, so the list of fares the standard ticket offers today is not something we saw.
The trade-off: three texts say book and one says collect. Taking the free ticket on the booking page, when the page offers it, follows the regulation. A plan to collect it at the ticket office rests on a single FAQ line that the regulation contradicts.
What travelers did
Thirteen travelers in our corpus asked how to get a child's free ticket, in posts from 2018 to 2026. Several of the older ones could not find the option on the site that sold the tickets then.
For the standard ticket, three describe collecting a child's ticket inside the Colosseum after the first check, with only the adults booked. The most recent is from June 2024.
“once inside after security there is a ticket box and they give you the child’s ticket here”
— TripAdvisor, 3 stars, June 2024
A Rome travel channel on YouTube gave its viewers the same split through the summer of 2024: collect inside with a standard ticket, book the child's free ticket with any other type. Two travelers booked the free tickets online together with arena tickets, in 2024 and 2025.
Not every account is smooth. Two more describe a second queue or a second office for the child's ticket, both in 2023. One reviewer was refused in October 2022 after booking a ticket at €0 that never arrived with the others.
“We went to the actual site and we were refused entrance because our daughter had no ticket.”
— TripAdvisor, 3 stars, October 2022
That family booked another free ticket on a phone at the entrance and went in. In 2019, two reviewers were asked at a counter for more than they had brought: a passport instead of a school card for a 15-year-old, and the infants themselves before their tickets were released.
Nothing in the corpus after June 2024 describes collecting a child's ticket inside with a standard booking. The accounts cannot tell you whether that counter still hands them out.
The trade-off: collecting inside worked for the people who wrote about it, and it kept the booking simple. It is also the route with no account behind it for more than two years and a regulation against it.
When the child's ticket is the one that is missing
A free ticket takes a place in a timed slot like any other. Two travelers found out after booking that a child had been left out. One had forgotten the free ticket on a Full Experience booking with the attic, in April 2026.
“Even though it’s free, the website says having a ticket is mandatory.”
— Reddit, April 2026
The other wanted to add a niece of 14 to a family booking and found the time sold out. Neither post says how the day went. One traveler's tour operator cancelled a booking made ten months ahead because it could not get the child's ticket.
“Due to ID checks, children apparently can't go in on an adult ticket, even if it is in their name.”
— Reddit, March 2025
The park's rule on name changes points the same way. Among the three cases in which a name can be changed, it lists a ticket type assigned to the wrong person in the same purchase: "a reduced or free ticket assigned to a paying visitor belonging to the same group, or vice versa". A ticket type belongs to the person it was issued for.
The trade-off: the child's ticket costs nothing and is the easiest one to forget. For the arena, the underground and the attic, which the park says have an admission quota, forgetting it can mean there is no place left in that slot at any price.
Resellers, tours, and a child who would have entered free
Six people in the corpus say a reseller or a tour charged for a child who enters free at the official price. The complaint runs from 2019 to March 2026.
“Children below 18 years get a free entry to Colosseum when booked through the official website, but in other websites, they are also charged a full price.” — Google Maps, 5 stars
A tour price pays for a guide as well as the entry, so a child's price above zero is not in itself a trick. What the reviews object to is entry-only tickets sold per head with no child fare. A reviewer in 2023 paid a platform for a son's ticket and still queued a second time for it.
The guide is charged on the official side too. Two travelers found that the guided part is charged for a child even when the entry is free, on visits sold by the official seller in 2023 and 2024.
Two accounts involve a disability. A wheelchair user in 2025 entered free with a companion and did not queue. A family in 2024 had paid for all five tickets online and did not get the free entry applied for the disabled visitor and her companion.
The trade-off: a reseller saves the fight with the official calendar. With children in the group, the free tickets are the part of the price that the official site gives back and many resellers do not.
Common questions
❓ Do children need a ticket for the Colosseum?
Yes. Under-18s enter free, but each needs a ticket in their own name for a timed slot. The park's regulation says all free tickets must be booked online, and an identity document is checked at the entrance.
❓ Is the Colosseum free at 18?
No. The free ticket is for visitors under 18. From 18 until the day of the 25th birthday, European Union citizens pay €2. Everyone else pays €18, unless they hold a Roma Pass or qualify for the RAP reduction.
❓ Can non-EU visitors aged 18 to 25 get the reduced Colosseum ticket?
The regulation lists the €2 ticket for European Union citizens only, on showing an identity document. One reviewer with a British 18-year-old was made to buy a full-price ticket at the entrance in April 2026, and the €2 was not refunded.
❓ Can I collect a child's free ticket at the Colosseum instead of booking it?
A FAQ on the park's ticket pages says free tickets are collected at the ticket offices, and travelers did that inside the Colosseum up to June 2024. The regulation and the park's free tickets page say they must be booked online. For the arena, the underground and the attic, every text says to book.
Author and Method
Research by Intercoper Curator Team. Evidence read and classified in October 2026.
From a corpus of 21,308 items about visiting the Colosseum, we pulled every item about free and reduced tickets for people: under-18s, the 18 to 25 fare, disability. That gave 114 after removing duplicates, and all were read and classified by hand. Free entry days for everyone are a different subject and were left out. The counts here are these: 13 travelers who asked how to get a child's free ticket; three who collected it inside and two who met a second queue; two who booked it online with arena tickets; one refused; two who found a child's ticket missing after booking and one whose operator cancelled; six who say a reseller or tour charged for a child, and two who paid for the guided part; four who asked about the €2 ticket and one charged the full price at the entrance; two who asked about students, one about nationality, two accounts of disability, and two reviewers from 2019 asked for other documents. Some travelers appear in more than one count.
These are counts of accounts on Reddit, TripAdvisor, Google Maps and YouTube, not rates. People write when a ticket is missing, so this article cannot tell you how often a child without a booked ticket is let through.
The rules were read on October 11, 2026: the visitor regulation approved on April 1, 2026 and updated on October 8, 2026, which exists in Italian only and is quoted in Italian with our translation beside it; the park's free tickets page; the FAQ on the park's ticket pages; the name change rule on the opening times page; and the booking page of the standard ticket on the official ticketing site. All of it is the part that expires.
